Burj 2020 will now be known as Uptown Dubai and come up next to JLT cluster

Dubai is getting a brand new name for its latest “district” in the making.

“Uptown Dubai” will now replace Burj 2020, and the masterplan will encompass an area of 10 million square feet featuring seven towers, set on seven levels of podium.
Two of these will be in the super-tall category, and there will also be a central plaza. The firm of Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill from Chicago has designed Uptown Dubai’s two super-tall towers.
The cluster will be located adjacent to Jumeira Lakes Towers (JLT). The development could create up to 10,000 job opportunities over the next 10 years, according to DMCC, the developer. Phase 1 will cover 2 million square feet and construction will commence this year itself. The build elements will be LEED Gold certified.

“Uptown Dubai is a world-class smart district unlike anything on the market, innovatively designed to deliver a new beat for business, and a truly urban destination for people to live, work and thrive,” said Ahmad Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman of DMCC.
The masterplan is by WATG, an authority on destination creation.
The residential component — eventually totalling about 3,000 units — will go on sale from the first quarter of 2018. The district’s main podium — 28 metres above ground — features the two-level central plaza and will be “larger than New York’s Times Square”.
Around it will be a chain of upscale outlets and connected to a mall below, all with direct access to the towers. Uptown Dubai will have more than 200 retail and F&B outlets and luxury hotels.
The intention is to create an “ultra-connected, energising district designed to meet Dubai’s next wave of growth”, Bin Sulayem said.
DMCC, which has a free zone status, currently operates a master-development with 66 towers, residential and commercial, and with 92,500 living and working within its boundaries.
