Which one of your senses is most closely linked to your emotions? Smell!

In fact, psychological studies have shown that 75 percent of emotions are triggered by smell, including pleasant childhood memories and feelings of well-being. This is why brands use scents (and the emotions they create) to sell products, but you don’t have to be a big-name brand to take advantage of this. You can easily use smells to be happier at home!

Here are ten simple ways to make your home smell great:

Hang Eucalyptus in the Shower

Most gardening stores and nurseries will sell sprigs of fresh eucalyptus for a few bucks a pop. We recommend buying 2-3 sprigs at a time and then hanging them in your shower. Tip: Hang them in a far corner where they won’t get wet!

When you take a steamy shower, the humidity will activate the oils in the eucalyptus and create a spa-like experience with no extra effort.

Place Dryer Sheets Behind Your Vents

If you love the smell of your dryer sheets, and you have central AC, this is going to make you a very happy camper. Simply grab a few dryer sheets and place them behind the vents that are pumping air into the rooms of your home. You’ll enjoy a fresh-laundry aroma for a few days!

Make Your Own Lavender Linen Spray

To make your linens and laundry smell like a field of wild flowers, all you need is rubbing alcohol, lavender essential oil, distilled water and five minutes.

Lather Your Sink with Mrs. Meyers Dish Soap

Truth time. Dish duty is kind of a pain. But there are ways to make it a little better. In addition to a few dishwashing hacks that speed up the process, try adding a pleasant smell to the mix! When it comes to dish soaps, our noses belong to any scent that Mrs. Meyers can dream up, especially Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Basil Dish Soap.

Tip: Once you’re done with the dishes, give your entire sink area a lathering, then rinse. That way, the smell will last a little longer!

Cloves and Orange Skins, Together at Last

There are a ton of ways to use citrus and other natural ingredients as air fresheners, but this little trick was new to us: Grab an orange and press 5-6 cloves into the skin of the orange. Then, wrap it up with a cord or piece of fabric and hang it in your kitchen or living room. The two scents combine for a unique aroma that can last up to two weeks.

Drop a Little Essential Oil onto Your Furnace Filter

Changing your furnace filter regularly is one of the easiest ways to improve the air quality of your home and prolong the life of your furnace. If you have a pleated or disposable filter, it’s also an opportunity to spread some fresh scents! Simply add a few drops of your favorite essential oil each time you change your furnace filter.

Strategically Place Cotton Balls

If you don’t have central AC, you can still spread fresh aromas throughout your home. Just purchase some cotton balls and your favorite essential oil. Add a few drops of oil to the cotton balls. Then, place them in subtle places around your house, such as dresser drawers, bathroom cabinets or between couch cushions.

Note: If you have curious children or pets at home, be sure your cotton balls are kept out of their reach.

Clean Your Baseboards with Dryer Sheets

Baseboards are pretty amazing at accruing dust and dirt over time, so it’s a good idea to clean them regularly. If the room you’re cleaning needs a little smell rejuvenation, grab a dryer sheet and use it as your cleaning “cloth.” The dryer sheet will do a great job of picking up dust, and will leave the room smelling great!

Make Your Own Furniture Spray

Simply mix a couple cups of warm water with a quarter cup of liquid fabric softener and 1 teaspoon of baking soda. Shake it up and spray away!

Fight Fridge Stink with Oats

Fill a bowl with fresh, unflavored oats – not the cinnamon and sugar variety. Set the bowl in the fridge. The absorbent nature of the oats will grab and hold onto the smell. Just make sure to toss the oats when you’re done – you don’t want to serve stink oats for breakfast!
